The Christmas Season is upon us but the choir is also celebrating for another reason. We are very pleased and excited to announce the appointment of our new Musical Director.
Appointment of Musical Director
On Saturday 14th December 2019, the choir formally appointed Nia Wyn Jones as our new Musical Director.
Long standing followers of the choir will recognise Nia as having previously been our Deputy Musical Director under Arwyn Roberts during 2004 and 2005.
In 2005, Nia was responsible for conducting us at what is probably one of the choir’s most memorable concerts, ‘The Glory of Wales’. Held in the grounds of the then Howells School. A tremendous event of music and fireworks.
Nia’s credentials
Nia is an Assistant Headteacher and Head of Music at Ysgol Maes Garmon, Mold.
Earlier this year, she successfully led the school choir in the youth finals of ‘Cor Cymru’ (S4C). She was also responsible for the Community Choirs in Theatre Clwyd’s recent production of ‘Mold Riots’ and Llangollen’s Celebration of Nations in 2017.
Moreover, she is a tutor with Only Kids Aloud, having worked as a conductor of Only Boys Aloud, Wrexham for several years. In addition, she was also the founder of the Ruthin based choir, Lleisiau Menlli, and has worked with Cor Dewi Sant in Llanarmon.
A keen composer of light songs, Nia has had two volumes of songs published by Welsh publishers Sain – ‘Cwlwm Cân’ and ‘Seren Wib’. She also composed the Peace Anthem for the 70th birthday of the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.
In addition, Nia has appeared as a conductor on ‘Dechrau Canu, Dechrau Canmol’ (S4C) and is also a regular contributor to BBC Radio Cymru’s Saturday morning news show.
Nia’s impeccable credentials make her the perfect choice as the choir’s new Musical Director.
Delighted to be back
Furthermore, Nia’s reaction to her appointment reflects the choir’s feelings.
Upon her appointment Nia said,:
‘I can honestly say it’s a delight to be back working with the Denbigh Male Voice Choir having had wonderful experiences shadowing former conductor, Arwyn Roberts.
I am more than aware how singing can bring positivity to people in so many ways- mental well-being, a sense of community, friendship…the list goes on!
It’s a huge privilege to take the choir into 2020 and I sincerely look forward to working with existing members but to also hopefully garner some new members in the near future.‘
The choir wholeheartedly agree.
Nia meets choir members
Anxious to make a start in her new role, Nia joined the choir in Cysgodfa, Denbigh whilst they were entertaining there on 17th December 2019. Here she took the opportunity to meet choir members over a cup of tea and mince pies.
