Denbigh choir celebrations were plentiful in 2023. Four joyous weddings were attended. The celebrations concluded with a memorable concert to commemorate the choir’s 35th anniversary.
Choir’s 35th Anniversary
Achieving our 35th Anniversary in 2023 was certainly a cause for celebration. However, when the covid pandemic struck, it was an unlikely milestone. A song unsung.
The appointment of new Musical Director and Accompanist, Sam Pritchard, changed all that. The pandemic was overcome and with new members joining the choir, it was decided to celebrate our 35th Anniversary in style with a Gala Concert.
A Male Voice Choir and Brass Band are a perfect concert combination. Our friends at the Royal Oakley Silver Band, and their very talented Musical Director, Paul Wilson MBE, agreed to join us for our 35th Anniversary Concert.
Nine months of detailed planning took place before the celebration concert was held at a packed Denbigh Town Hall on 14th October, 2023. And what a musical extravaganza it was.
Favourites Old and New
With the choir performing old favourites ‘Rachie’ (I Bob Un Sydd Ffyddlon), ‘Myfanwy’, ‘O Gymru‘ and ‘Deep Harmony’ the audience reaction was overwhelming.
A new aspect of the choir’s performance was the inclusion of audience participation. Sam Pritchard led the audience in hand clapping near the end of his arrangement of four Welsh folk songs, ‘Medli’. Judging by the applause that followed this will have to be included during our future concerts.
The Royal Oakley Silver Band was the epitome of musical entertainment. Playing the much loved ‘Floral Dance’, ‘The Final Countdown’, ‘Men Of Harlech’ and much, much more with gusto and panache.
Moreover, it was easy to see why the band is the current Wales Area 4th Section Champions. A thoroughly deserved standing ovation followed it’s spectacular performance.
The concert finished with the band and choir joining forces to perform the evergreen ‘Gwahoddiad‘. A further lengthy standing ovation followed. It was a proud celebratory moment.
The Denbigh Choir’s exciting celebration of 35 years of making music will long be remembered. Undoubtedly, our friends in the Royal Oakley Silver Band will be in demand to perform with the choir again in the future.
Thank you to each and every one of you for so eagerly being part of our special celebration.
